The Beane 2018 Podcast is back for episode No. 2, discussing what a progressive criminal justice system looks like with Dave Myers, candidate for San Diego County Sheriff.
With his second podcast, Jordan Beane sits down with fellow candidate Dave Myers, another Democratic looking to beat a Republican incumbent. Unlike Jordan’s District 2, a fairly compact cut-out of America’s Finest City, Dave has to traverse the entire county – from Imperial Beach to Borrego Springs, Oceanside to Jamul, and everywhere in between. Thus a podcast conversation is a great way to reach out to those disparate communities across the county.
The episode kicks off with some listener suggestions for renaming the podcast (0:52) plus an update from the first episode regarding the use of a certain pesticide (1:31). From there we meet Dave Myers (4:45), discuss the differences between the Sheriff’s Department and SDPD (6:36) and what a progressive Sheriff’s Department would look like (8:10). Additionally, Jordan and Dave talk about Dave’s short term plans to change the culture of the department (9:20), running as a member of the LGBT community (10:50), jails as mental health facilities (13:21) and what the relationship between those living on the streets & law enforcement should be (14:12).
A first-time candidate, just like Jordan, the conversation between the two will help you get more informed on what the future of San Diego’s criminal justice policies could look like. With terms like “inclusion” and “community”, Dave is the kind of candidate that knows we’ll off better off in America’s Finest City if we help pay attention to those who feel marginalized by those tasked to keep them safe. It’s an issue that both Jordan and Dave are serious about and one that we can start making progress on in 2018.
San Diego County, like District 2, is hungry for a change after being represented by Republicans who don’t share their values. Dave Myers is ready to provide that change, creating a more inclusive sheriff’s department for all San Diegans.
